On many cosmetics, we find more and more the term "Peptides". True beauty allies, these active ingredients play a major role in the fight against skin ageing. Why are they effective in reducing wrinkles? Lyssa explains:
What is it?
Peptides are sequences of amino acids that notably stimulate the production of proteins such as collagen, keratin or elastin.
There are several variations:
Acetyl Tetrapeptide-15, Hexapeptide-2, Acetyl Tetrapeptide-9, Alanyl Glutamine, Acetyl Hexapeptide-1, Carnosine
If peptides are so popular in cosmetics, it's because they have powerful cellular activity. For the epidermis, it is an essential element for their different actions. They provide hydration, firmness and elasticity to the skin.
In cosmetics, peptides are not necessarily just anti-aging active ingredients: they are also used for their quality as a skin care and protection agent, hair conditioner, antioxidant or of humectant.
Depending on the nature of the amino acids and their sequence, they can have an anti-aging, anti-wrinkle, antioxidant, healing, exfoliating action, for example.
How does it work?
Imagine peptides as little messengers that prompt our cells to produce to follow a specific action. They can stimulate the production of collagen and hyaluronic acid, for example, in order to make the skin revitalized and more protected against external aggressions (pollution, etc.). This process, very popular in anti-aging / anti-wrinkle care, helps boost cell rejuvenation. However, do not expect immediate results: the beneficial effects generally appear after at least 4 weeks of application (too bad!)
To fight against skin aging?
Each peptide has its function, there is almost one peptide per skin indication.
Enzyme-inhibiting peptides are preferred for combating fine lines and wrinkles, thanks to their function as a collagen production stimulator.
Oligopeptides (long chain peptides) provide trace elements that also promote the production of collagen.
Signal peptides are good anti-aging thanks to their function as collagen and elastin boosters. And finally, neurotransmitter peptides can be effective in limiting muscle contractions (and thus avoiding frown lines!)
Most anti-aging treatments made up of peptides are generally combined with other active ingredients for greater and longer-lasting results: vitamin C, hyaluronic acid (or other moisturizing, regenerating agents, etc.).
Peptides are already particularly effective active ingredients in small quantities, it is not necessary to cover yourself with cream to have a faster effect. The advantage: peptides are very well tolerated by all skin types, they are suitable for everyone (if you are patient, of course!)
Peptides are also present in our food and are activated when digested.
The richest in peptides: dairy products. Milk, cheeses, yogurts are enriched with antimicrobial and antioxidant active ingredients.
Peptides are also found in eggs, cereals (corn, rice, wheat), soy and beans.
That said, a balanced and varied diet is a good solution for taking care of your skin, isn't it?
